UNICORN: Celebrating 36 Years of Trusted Health Care

Kumar Gunness, Managing Director

“We aim to provide the best products and services available on the market”

Unicorn was officially founded in 1984 as an importer and distributor of pharmaceutical goods. Kumar Gunness, one of the founders, remembers: “I was toying with this idea, ever since I came back to Mauritius. Having gained years of professional experience in the United Kingdom, we created Unicorn to offer products and services that did not yet exist on the island.” The medical community welcomed Unicorn from the onset as Kumar Gunness had strategically leveraged on his professional and international network. “When we launched the company, there were about 50 pharmacies across the island, while today, the number exceeds 370. Partners and clients alike were actually glad to have access to a varied and larger choice of products adapted to their needs.”

Thirty-six years later, Unicorn is a credible and trusted partner. “We are grateful – and proud – to say that we have instilled a relationship and culture of trust with all our partners, beginning with our staff.” From 4 employees, Unicorn workforce is now of 135 collaborators. What are the lessons to be learnt about Unicorn’s journey? “It is crucial to be attentive to the needs of our collaborators, be it suppliers, customers or our personnel. Only by paying attention, and listening with an open mind can we find common ground, solutions and opportunities for growth. The ability to listen means we can reinvent ourselves to adapt to a constantly changing environment. We can then improve our services and create new business opportunities. In the same breath, we pay constant attention to ongoing research and innovation in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medicine and technology. The aim is of course to provide the public with the best products and services available on the market.”

Kumar Gunness ends with a message to Unicorn’s team and stakeholders for 2021. “We went through hard times with the Covid-19 pandemic. We realized how the world, and life itself are fragile and precious. While most Mauritians remained in the safety of their homes during lockdown, our teams have been working bravely out there, relentlessly serving the population. This was remarkable. We have been able to satisfy the needs of our clients in spite of supply chain disruptions. Our employees worked hard despite the risks posed by the virus to themselves and their families. If we have been able to overcome these obstacles in such dark times, I am confident that, as long as we cooperate together, we can win over any future challenges.”
