Prolonged sunlight exposure and its dangers

In the age of climate change and rising global temperatures, the importance of skincare cannot be understated, and even more so during the Mauritian summer season. While exposure to sunlight presents a multitude of health benefits, too much sun causes skin damage and may trigger mild to acute skin disorders.

The prolonged effects of sunlight without sufficient protection causes sunburn, dry skin, photoaging (premature aging of the skin caused by sunrays), hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and sun-induced allergies when assessing the visible impacts on the skin surface. However, components of sunlight such as ultraviolet rays (both UVA and UVB) and high-energy visible light (HEVIS) are able to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and cause DNA damage at a cellular level. These rays are responsible for the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which greatly contribute to the youthful and firm appearance of the skin. Furthermore, UV rays and HEVIS generate free radicals when they react with skin cells, resulting in oxidative stress, a direct determinant of Actinic Keratosis and Skin Cancer.

Skin cancer being the most common of all cancers, medical organisations such as the American Cancer Society endorse the use of sunscreen as a significant means of preventing its onset, and that of other ailments stemming from prolonged exposure to harmful sun rays. Given our tropical climate, this is particularly relevant in the Mauritian context as hyperpigmentation is an ever-present risk that affects a considerable part of the population, and can be conclusively avoided through the use of the SVR Sun Secure line of products.

Sun Secure and its protective benefits

Following the latest research findings in the field of sunlight-induced skin conditions, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls for the use of sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30+ and above, as well as dermatological protection against UVA and UVB rays. That being said, the SVR Sun Secure line of products surpasses these requirements in contrast to conventional sunscreens by being the first dermatologically-tested sun protection to shield the skin from 100% of sun rays.

Indeed, besides its SPF of 50+ and its ability to filter UVA and UVB rays, the SVR Sun Secure line of products go even further by providing defence against HEVIS, visible light and Infra-Red rays, while repairing cellular damage caused by the sun. Highly resistant to water, sand, perspiration and towel drying, it allows for optimal protection for the whole family to safely enjoy the outdoors during summer. Thanks to its strict and dermatologically-tested formula, it is free from controversial ingredients such as paraben, propylene glycol and octocrylene for up to 8 hours of skin-healthy effectiveness.
