International Conferencing on Diabetes

Unicorn (MSJ Limited) one of the co-sponsors of an international conference on diabetes and associated diseases

Our company, Unicorn (MSJ limited) is actively engaged in the promotion of wellbeing in the Mauritian society, in line of our motto. One of the latest initiatives in this domain was to be among the sponsors an international conference on diabetes and associated diseases, which was held from the 28th to the 30th July 2017 at Intercontinental Hotel in Balaclava.

Leading experts coming from India, China, Ireland, Kuwait, Spain…discussed on the latest technological and medical advances. In addition, the participants comprising of world-renowned professors, shared their experiences on the prevention and control of these health problems in their respective country.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Health and Quality Of Life, the ‘Dasman Diabetes Institute’ of Kuwait, the ‘World Community on Prevention of Diabetes Foundation’ from Spain, and the ‘Diabetes Foundation’ of Mauritius.

The conference had also served as a useful platform for the health professionals from different parts of the world, not only to learn the innovations that will help relieve those suffering from diabetes but also in connecting each other so that they can enter in fruitful collaborative partnership in the future.

Furthermore, it is worth pointing out that according to the International Diabetes Federation, Mauritius topped the ranking of African states in terms of diabetes prevalence in 2015 and it stood out as the third highest country in the world with a rate of 22.8%.

Fighting cellulite

Women often complain about cellulite. Specific areas of their skin have the appearance of an orange peel, especially in the thighs, but it can also be present on the legs, buttocks or stomach.

Cellulite usually occurs after puberty and several factors can all play a role in its occurrence such as aging, hormones, genetics and dramatic weight changes.

One of the main causes of cellulite is the underlying fat deposits.
Health Aid, a leading British supplier of supplements and vitamins, markets Cellusite tablets. HealthAid Cellusite Tablets are a synergistic blend of well-balanced herbs and nutrients, selectively chosen and mixed to fight existing cellulite.

Adults are recommended to take 2 tablets daily with their main meal.

Furthermore, people suffering from allergies will be delighted to learn that the Cellusite tablets of Health Aid, are free from yeast, gluten, wheat, dairy and salt.

According to the American osteopathic physician Lionel Bissoon, author of the book The Cellulite Cure, cellulite affects 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men, mostly in industrial nations. As women start approaching menopause, estrogen starts decreasing.

From 25 to 35 is when you start seeing the appearance of cellulite. Estrogen has an impact on the blood vessels. When estrogen starts to decrease, you lose receptors in blood vessels and thighs, so you have decreased circulation. With decreased circulation, you get less oxygen and nutrition to that area.

A big thumb up to the World Breastfeeding Week

We at Unicorn (MSJ Ltd) have supported the World Breastfeeding Week, a laudable initiative of the Unicef (United Nations international children fund) and of the WHO (World Health Organisation).

Breastfeeding is key to sustainable development and can contribute to reduce the mortality rate of children of less than 5 years old.

By encouraging mothers to breastfeed their baby, WHO estimates that the lives of 820 000 children under 5 could be saved throughout the world in a year.

Breastfeeding also helps to improve the long-term health of children and decrease the risk of them developing non-communicable diseases including childhood asthma and obesity.

The mothers also reap benefits since longer duration of breastfeeding helps to reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director of Unicef and Mrs Margaret Chan, Director-General of the WHO, said that breastfeeding is one of the most effective and cost-effective ways to save and improve the lives of children everywhere, yielding lifelong health benefits for infants and their mothers. Increasingly, it is clear that breastfeeding is not only the cornerstone of a child’s healthy development; it is also the foundation of a country’s development.

However, they expressed their concern that breastfeeding rates have remained stagnant for the last 20 years, mainly due to too many women not receiving the information and support they need to breastfeed successfully.

Prevalence of diabetes in our country is quite alarming

According to a survey carried out in 2015 jointly by the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute of Australia and the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life of Mauritius, there are an estimated 257 442 people aged between 25 and 74 years suffering from diabetes in our island.

Some healthcare professionals might rejoice themselves that there has been a slight decline in the prevalence of diabetes among adults in Mauritius, from 23.6% in 2009 to 22.8% last year.

However, the survey pointed out that the proportion of poorly controlled diabetic patients has reached 42%!

If they do not take corrective action, diabetes may result in the long-term in the dysfunction and failure of various organs and may lead to cardiovascular diseases, visual loss, amputation or renal failure.

The consequences can be devastating in terms of direct medical costs and have a negative impact on our national productivity.

To monitor their blood sugar level, an increasing number of diabetic patients use Contour TS™ glucometer. This device is available in most pharmacies throughout Mauritius and its great popularity is due to its simple on screen messages.

In addition to its simple on screen messages, the Contour TS™ glucometer gives accurate readings of a person’s blood sugar level without requiring any coding hassle. It also provides the results rapidly within 5 seconds. Diabetics can have a better control on their blood sugar level.
