Fighting cellulite

Women often complain about cellulite. Specific areas of their skin have the appearance of an orange peel, especially in the thighs, but it can also be present on the legs, buttocks or stomach.

Cellulite usually occurs after puberty and several factors can all play a role in its occurrence such as aging, hormones, genetics and dramatic weight changes.

One of the main causes of cellulite is the underlying fat deposits.
Health Aid, a leading British supplier of supplements and vitamins, markets Cellusite tablets. HealthAid Cellusite Tablets are a synergistic blend of well-balanced herbs and nutrients, selectively chosen and mixed to fight existing cellulite.

Adults are recommended to take 2 tablets daily with their main meal.

Furthermore, people suffering from allergies will be delighted to learn that the Cellusite tablets of Health Aid, are free from yeast, gluten, wheat, dairy and salt.

According to the American osteopathic physician Lionel Bissoon, author of the book The Cellulite Cure, cellulite affects 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men, mostly in industrial nations. As women start approaching menopause, estrogen starts decreasing.

From 25 to 35 is when you start seeing the appearance of cellulite. Estrogen has an impact on the blood vessels. When estrogen starts to decrease, you lose receptors in blood vessels and thighs, so you have decreased circulation. With decreased circulation, you get less oxygen and nutrition to that area.

The impact of technology and smartphones on sexual life

What impact have technology and smartphones on the bedroom activities of couples while they are on vacation?
A recent survey on People’s holiday sexpectations’ carried out by the leading condom brand Durex on 2 000 adults and released in May 2016, unveiled that a fifth of them said that their phones and tablets get in the way of their sex life.

Furthermore, 15% admitted that they have less sex on holiday than they do at home because of technology.
40% responded that they are less likely to instigate sex if their partner is on their phone in bed.
Moreover, more than a quarter of the persons interviewed added that checking phones on holiday can cause rows. 59% added that they, their partner or both, spent too much time on the screen and 72 respondents even revealed that they used their phone during sex!

Volker Sydow, Global Director at Durex, stated that holidays used to be a time to relax and reconnect with our partner. However, this experiment has shown us that growing reliance on portable technology for entertainment and affirmation, even when on holiday, is blocking our chance to refresh our relationships. Durex is calling on couples to take a break from their tech whilst on holiday and enjoy touching their partner rather than their phone.

How to maintain a healthy weight?

Many persons cannot lose weight even when undertaking a diet. Some others shed their extra kilos but regain them afterwards (this is called the yo-yo effect of dieting).
Dr. Robert Akins, a well-known American cardiologist, carried out extensive research and found that the best way of maintaining a healthy weight, is to limit the body’s intake of sugar and carbohydrates.
His patients not only successfully lost weight but also, kept it off!
Moreover, Dr. Robert Akins pointed out that we can use two different types of fuel to obtain energy: either by taking sugar (and carbohydrates that are quickly turned into sugar by the body) or fat.
A typical diet is based on reducing the intake of calories. However, it is still high in carbohydrates (and thus sugar).
As a result, many people oscillate between sugar “highs” (with the excess sugar being stored as fat in the body) or sugar “lows” (where the person feels very hungry). Thus, making it really hard to lose weight!
Dr. Robert Akins developed a unique technique of losing weight by limiting carbohydrates (sugar) so that the body burns the fat including body fat, for fuel.
We can thus lose weight while feeling full. The science behind the Atkins principles has been proven by over 80 clinical studies!
Discover in your nearest pharmacy or supermarket, Atkins Lift Protein Bars. Each contains 20-21g of high quality whey protein and 4-5g net carbs that will help keep you going without slowing you down with extra sugar and carbohydrates.

What are the aggravating factors of acne?

75% of young people suffer from acne during their adolescence.

According to dermatologist Dr Aurelie Acher of Hyfac, a French laboratory which produces a complete range of pharmaceutical products to treat acne, there are several aggravating factors:

First, sugary foods including candies, chocolates or cakes but also the high consumption of dairy products can cause a rapid rise in the level of insulin and of insulin growth factor 1 (IGF 1). In response, the sebaceous glands will produce more sebum, leading to acne.

Another contributing factor of acne is the sun. A skin damaged by the sun’s rays will thicken and the pores may clog, thus promoting the appearance of blackheads.

An additional cause is stress. When someone is nervous, he or she will release stress hormones which increase the production of sebum.

Moreover, tobacco slows the healing of wounds and therefore aggravates acne marks or scars. The nicotine in tobacco reduces the blood supply to the skin and hence, the intake of reparative molecules.
To fight acne and obtain a beautiful as well as clear skin, there is a range of Hyfac products available in pharmacies.

Manufactured in France, they cleanse, treat and maintain a healthy skin. Their effectiveness has been proven since over 30 years. For more information, please click on www.hyfac.fr

A big thumb up to the World Breastfeeding Week

We at Unicorn (MSJ Ltd) have supported the World Breastfeeding Week, a laudable initiative of the Unicef (United Nations international children fund) and of the WHO (World Health Organisation).

Breastfeeding is key to sustainable development and can contribute to reduce the mortality rate of children of less than 5 years old.

By encouraging mothers to breastfeed their baby, WHO estimates that the lives of 820 000 children under 5 could be saved throughout the world in a year.

Breastfeeding also helps to improve the long-term health of children and decrease the risk of them developing non-communicable diseases including childhood asthma and obesity.

The mothers also reap benefits since longer duration of breastfeeding helps to reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director of Unicef and Mrs Margaret Chan, Director-General of the WHO, said that breastfeeding is one of the most effective and cost-effective ways to save and improve the lives of children everywhere, yielding lifelong health benefits for infants and their mothers. Increasingly, it is clear that breastfeeding is not only the cornerstone of a child’s healthy development; it is also the foundation of a country’s development.

However, they expressed their concern that breastfeeding rates have remained stagnant for the last 20 years, mainly due to too many women not receiving the information and support they need to breastfeed successfully.

Prevalence of diabetes in our country is quite alarming

According to a survey carried out in 2015 jointly by the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute of Australia and the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life of Mauritius, there are an estimated 257 442 people aged between 25 and 74 years suffering from diabetes in our island.

Some healthcare professionals might rejoice themselves that there has been a slight decline in the prevalence of diabetes among adults in Mauritius, from 23.6% in 2009 to 22.8% last year.

However, the survey pointed out that the proportion of poorly controlled diabetic patients has reached 42%!

If they do not take corrective action, diabetes may result in the long-term in the dysfunction and failure of various organs and may lead to cardiovascular diseases, visual loss, amputation or renal failure.

The consequences can be devastating in terms of direct medical costs and have a negative impact on our national productivity.

To monitor their blood sugar level, an increasing number of diabetic patients use Contour TS™ glucometer. This device is available in most pharmacies throughout Mauritius and its great popularity is due to its simple on screen messages.

In addition to its simple on screen messages, the Contour TS™ glucometer gives accurate readings of a person’s blood sugar level without requiring any coding hassle. It also provides the results rapidly within 5 seconds. Diabetics can have a better control on their blood sugar level.
